Polling rate is one of those specs that sounds important, gets bigger numbers every year, and almost nobody explains clearly. Here's what it actually is, whether the higher numbers matter, and how to check your own in ten seconds.
What is polling rate?
Polling rate is how many times per second your mouse reports its position to your PC, measured in hertz (Hz).
- 125Hz = a report every 8ms
- 500Hz = every 2ms
- 1000Hz = every 1ms
- 8000Hz = every 0.125ms
A higher polling rate means less delay between moving your hand and the cursor updating on screen. It doesn't make your mouse more accurate — that's the sensor's job — it just makes movement feel more immediate and smooth.

Polling rate vs DPI — they're not the same
People mix these up constantly. They're completely different specs:
- DPI is how far the cursor moves for a given hand movement (sensitivity).
- Polling rate is how often the mouse reports that movement (responsiveness).
You can have a 400 DPI mouse polling at 1000Hz, or a 3200 DPI mouse at 125Hz. One controls distance, the other controls timing. If it's DPI you're really after, see what mouse DPI is and measure yours with the DPI analyzer.
Does a higher polling rate actually matter?
Yes — up to a point, then it's diminishing returns.
- 125Hz → 500/1000Hz is a genuine, noticeable upgrade. The jump from 8ms to 1ms of reporting delay makes the cursor feel tighter and smoother, especially on a high-refresh monitor. If your mouse is stuck at 125Hz, bump it up.
- 1000Hz → 4000/8000Hz gives much smaller gains. In blind testing most players can't reliably tell 1000Hz from 8000Hz. It can help competitive players on 240Hz+ displays, but it also uses noticeably more CPU and can cause stutters on weaker systems or in poorly optimised games.
The sweet spot for almost everyone is 1000Hz. It's smooth, universally supported, and light on your system.
Polling rate and refresh rate work together
Responsiveness is a chain: your mouse reports (polling rate) → your game renders → your monitor displays (refresh rate). A 1000Hz mouse feels its best paired with a high-refresh monitor, because there are more frames for those fast reports to show up in. How to check and change your polling rate
Check it: run the polling rate test and move your mouse continuously — the estimated rate is your answer.
Change it:
- Gaming mice: open the maker's software (Logitech G Hub, Razer Synapse, SteelSeries GG, etc.) and set the polling rate to 1000Hz. Some mice have an on-board button or a switch on the underside.

What is a good polling rate for gaming? 1000Hz is the sweet spot — smooth, responsive and universally supported without stressing your system. 500Hz is perfectly fine too; the big upgrade is getting off 125Hz.
Is 8000Hz polling rate worth it? For most players, no. The gain over 1000Hz is tiny and hard to perceive, and it uses more CPU. It mainly benefits competitive players on very high-refresh monitors with CPU headroom to spare.
Does polling rate affect DPI or sensitivity? No. Polling rate is how often the mouse reports; DPI is how far the cursor moves. Changing one doesn't change the other.
Why is my polling rate lower than expected? The reading only reflects how fast you're actually moving the mouse, and browsers can cap event delivery — move continuously for the best reading. If it's genuinely low, your mouse may be set to 125Hz; raise it in its software.
Can a high polling rate cause problems? Very high rates (4000–8000Hz) can raise CPU usage and, on weaker PCs or unoptimised games, cause stutters. If you notice issues, drop back to 1000Hz.
