DPI is the number every gaming mouse shouts about — 16,000! 26,000! 30,000! — and it's almost entirely marketing. Here's what DPI really is, why the big numbers don't matter, and what to actually pay attention to.
What is mouse DPI?
DPI (dots per inch) is how many steps your mouse reports for one inch of physical movement. Higher DPI moves the cursor further for the same hand motion; lower DPI moves it less.
- 400 DPI: move the mouse one inch, the cursor travels 400 pixels-worth.
- 1600 DPI: the same inch travels four times as far.
That's it. DPI is a hardware sensitivity setting — nothing more.

DPI vs CPI — same thing, different name
CPI (counts per inch) is the technically-correct term; DPI is the popular one. "Dots" comes from printers, where it makes sense; mice actually count sensor steps, so CPI is more accurate. Some brands (like Logitech and Finalmouse) label their mice in CPI. For practical purposes, DPI and CPI mean the same thing — don't overthink it.
DPI vs sensitivity — the important distinction
This trips everyone up. Your total sensitivity comes from two multiplied numbers:
- DPI — the hardware setting on the mouse.
- In-game sensitivity — the software multiplier inside each game.
Multiply them and you get eDPI (effective DPI), the number that actually describes how fast your crosshair moves:
eDPI = DPI × in-game sensitivity

Why the giant DPI numbers are meaningless
A 30,000 DPI mouse sounds impressive, but nobody plays anywhere near that — at that sensitivity a twitch of your wrist would spin you in a circle. The vast majority of players game between 400 and 1600 DPI. Pushing DPI into five figures does nothing useful; it's a spec-sheet number, not a feature.
What DPI do pros use?
Lower than you'd think. Most competitive FPS pros play at 400 or 800 DPI and adjust the in-game sensitivity from there. Low DPI gives the sensor an easier job and lets them use big, precise arm movements. The takeaway: pick 800 DPI, leave it, and adjust sensitivity in-game.
The number that actually matters: cm/360
Neither DPI nor in-game sens transfers between games — each game turns a different amount. The one figure that's truly universal is cm/360: how many centimetres you physically move the mouse to turn a full 360°. It measures your hand, so it's identical everywhere.
