Every dot travels at the same speed, but each row is capped to a different frame rate. Watch how the slow rows step while the bottom row — running at your display's full refresh — glides.
On a 60Hz screen the bottom two rows look identical — that's the point: your monitor can't show motion smoother than its refresh rate. On 120Hz+ the bottom row is clearly smoother. (The capped rows are simulated, so they look the same on any monitor.)
A refresh rate test detects how many frames per second your monitor displays, in hertz (Hz). It times how fast your browser can draw new frames and reports your rate — 60, 120, 144, 240Hz or more — so you can confirm your display is running at its full speed.
How it's measured
The browser draws frames in sync with your monitor. By timing the gap between frames and taking the median across many samples, the test works out how many frames per second your display is actually refreshing at, then snaps to the nearest standard rate.
If the number looks too low
A common surprise: a 144Hz monitor reading 60Hz. That usually means Windows or macOS is set to 60Hz — open your display settings and select the higher rate. Battery-saver modes and background load can also cap it. Once it's running fast, feel the responsiveness on the reaction time test.

You also need a graphics card that can push enough frames to use it.
Does refresh rate need a matching frame rate?
To feel the benefit, your game's frame rate should reach your refresh rate — a 144Hz monitor shines when your GPU renders around 144 fps. If your frame rate is well below the refresh rate, you won't see the full smoothness, though technologies like G-Sync and FreeSync help by matching the two.
